Other software we like
Lot's of people have been asking about the use of mirrors during the download process. In a nutshell, mirrors are just an alternate site to download content from. Sometimes, as in the case of Spybot S&D the software is offered for free and the makers can't provide enough bandwidth in order for everybody to download at the speed we're accustomed to. Other times, it's simply a way to try and generate cash. The important thing is, don't let it throw you. Just go through the motions and choose a mirror and download the darn thing.
As is the case with the
,
the software on this page is almost always free. That said, this page is
seperate for a couple of reasons. For one thing, some of this software we
may not have personally tested. Reason 2, some of this software may require
more than a passing knowledge of computer operation.
ClamWin - A antivirus program.
Untangle - Spam blocker, virus blocker, spyware blocker
geOS - This has been installed on some netbooks.
"a game about bouncing" - A break from reality game. This game comes in a zip file. You will need to right click on the file and select "extract all" from that menu. This process will create another folder named Bounce with a folder inside of it labeled " a game about bouncing". Inside of this file there's a file called " bouncing.exe". Click or double click on this file to start the game. If you like this game, you can right click on "bouncing.exe" and select "create shortcut". This will produce a shortcut you can then drag to your desktop.
Animoto - A slideshow, your pictures, set to their music or yours, in a unique way (no two videos ever the same), free (30 seconds). Thanks Mike
Better color management for Windows XP - from Microsoft
IrFanView - Is a free image file viewer and much more.
Microsoft Photo Story 3 for Windows XP
Pencil -
PhotoShop Express - 2GB of storage and lots of toys to play with. And it's free.
Picasa 3 - Google's free answer to our graphics needs.
Microsoft PowerToys for Windows XP - About halfway down the page you will see "Image Resizer". On the right side you will see a link to download this "powertoy" as a stand alone add into Windows Explorer. This will add to your right click menu the ability to resize photos to common resolutions with just a few clicks.
Media - There's an abundance of choices when it comes to media centers and players. The pickins aint slim and the prices are free. The reason the field's wide open is MP3's aren't the only way to get, play and store your music. And while you may be used to MPeg's and avi's there are new formats in town.
Audacity - Probably the best free sound editor and more.
Boxee - A free media center! Supposedly related to XBMC, at least according to Wikipedia look here.
Flac - Free Lossless Audio Codec. What this means is MP3 without the loss of audio quality. This is good.
TVersity - This software makes it easier to watch and listen to your media or internet media on your TV or smartphone. Disable UAC (Vista).
VLC Media player
- Yet another media player.
![]()
WinAmp - You guessed it, a media player.
XBMC - It's a media center! X Box Media Center!
Revo Uninstaller - Not just a uninstaller
7 Zip - Zips or unzips zip files in addition to rar etc.
Clipdiary - Clipboard enhancement more
Weather Exchange - Free software that connects you to local weather monitors in your area. From Ambient Weather
DriveImage XML - Look on the left side for DriveImage XML but don't hesitate to stop there.
Farr
- Find and Run Robot. If your finger gets tired
from all that clicking, this program is what your looking for.

HFSExplorer - Used for accessing files on Mac devices (Apple computers or Mac formatted IPods).
Jing - Screen capture and more. This program requires an account setup. It's free, it needs your email and you get 2 gigs of storage online for images that you capture.
KeePass - Let's you keep your password on a USB drive.
Launchy - Provides a different way to launch programs
Notepad++ - Like Windows notepad only way different
Microsoft Shared Computer Toolkit for Windows XP 1.1
PeerGuardian 2 - using this program you can block websites and much more. for Windows XP for Vista
PrintKey2000 - Windows screen capture utility. An alternate site is here.
Process Lasso - Is used for looking at processes on your computer.
Roboform 2go - This installs on a USB flash drive (the one I used was 128 MB) and will remember your passwords for you to varous websites.
Windows SteadyState 2.5 - This is from Microsoft and it's free. We have not used this yet, but the claims sound interesting. If those pesky kids or grandkids or some idiot messes with your computer, on the next restart, everything is back to how you had it. Hmmmm, sounds like it might even protect you from you.
WinDirStat - Windows Directory Statistics. We've used this program. After install it takes awhile to do it's thing and the more files you have the longer it takes. After it's done, you get a graphical interface showing you what's on your hard drive. The larger files take up more space (Duh!) so they appear as a bigger chunk.
