Software We'd Adopt into the Family

Lot's of people have been asking about the use of mirrors during the download process. In a nutshell, mirrors are just an alternate site to download content from. Sometimes, as in the case of Spybot S&D the software is offered for free and the makers can't provide enough bandwidth in order for everybody to download at the speed we're accustomed to. Other times, it's simply a way to try and generate cash. The important thing is, don't let it throw you. Just go through the motions and choose a mirror and download the darn thing.

Browsers

Chrome - From Google. From the people that brought us Google. Well, Duh! Give it a try! We did. It's fast, stable (so far) and free! It installs over the web ( if you can follow directions ) in less than 5 minutes and we like it.

Firefox - The "other white meat" internet browser. There are more browsers than you can shake a stick at available to you, but if this is your first alternative browser then start here.

Instant Messaging

Pidgin - Used to be called GAIM. An excellent AIM replacement that uses less resources

Trillian Basic 3 - An excellent AIM replacement that uses less resources

Maintenance

CCleaner - Lot's of people call it "crap cleaner" and that's exactly right. This software will search for and help you remove odds and ends leftover from installing programs as well as files that aren't used anymore. It can also clean your registry and help your computer run better and faster. If your not sure about how to use it, click analyze first and it will show you what it wants to clean up, then click "run cleaner" to make those changes permanent.

PC DeCrapifier - Normally, I just build a computer if I need one, or format and reinstall WinXP. But if you just bought a laptop, it comes loaded with all kinds of junk that helps bring the cost of the computer down. Probably not for you, for them, the manufacturers. Running this program will help get rid of all the "crap" that comes with it. Or say you just used your System Restore disks (assuming you could find them). Your system will be loaded with stuff you don't need, never wanted and didn't ask for. The thing to remember is most of these applications are free and can be installed anytime if you feel you need them, but that should be for you to decide.

Microsoft Section

Windows XP - Compared to Vista, XP is a dream. Actually, it's the best Operating system from Microsoft. It's not free ( at least not legally ) but it's stable and we recommend it. Buy it from newegg or somewhere if you don't have it or your original disks. If you bought a computer with Vista installed but want XP, buying Windows XP would be a good first step towards going back to XP. We will come up with a series of links related to this soon.

Excel Viewer 2003 - If this link does not work, just search Google for "Excel Viewer 2003". With this software installed you can, and I quote from their site: "Open, view, and print Excel workbooks, even if you don't have Excel installed. This download is a replacement for Excel Viewer 97 and all previous Excel Viewer versions".

Word Viewer 2003 - Same as above, if the link don't work, just search for it.

Power point viewer 2003 - Look up.

Power Point Viewer 2007 - Duh!

From what I understand, you can copy data from these opened documents to other programs. I hate to be all like, hint, hint, but that sounds like you could open a document in one of these viewers if you couldn't open it in say, OpenOffice (which you should be able to, but if you're having trouble, hint, hint) and then copy the information into OpenOffice or you're favorite free program. Just a thought.

Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats - If you are having trouble opening documents created with Office 2007, try this.

Microsoft Photo Info 1.0 - Provides EXIF info when you hover over a thumbnail and adds "photo info" to the right click menu. This is a very handy piece of software that Microsoft used to provide for free but doesn't anymore. It stills lives on the internet though! Have fun. An alternate site is here. Another free and handy item from Microsoft adds right click photo resizing. Its here.

Office

OpenOffice - From Sun Microsystems. Probably the best Microsoft Office alternate or replacement but the only office you should own or use. And why is that you ask? It's free and it works. Nuff said.

Protection

Antivirus

AntiVir - Free! This is a antivirus program. Probably the best I've used. I've recommended it over the years to people and many times it catches things the other guys don't. In order to purchase the 1 year Premium package, click here please. And the 3 year Premium package (the best deal) is here. Thank you.

Spyware

Adaware Anniversary Edition - Free! This program helps in the fight against spyware. It's used and recommended by everyone. Listed in Must Have!

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware - Free and Pay. There's a new guy in town and he's tough. This program will take care of problems and should have been here last year. The name is a mouthful but, I don't care.

Spybot S&D - Free! Spybot Search and Destroy. Destroy, destroy, destroy! Only this time it's not the Robot attacking the Robinsons in "Lost in Space", it's Spybot S&D attacking spyware, malware, badware and adware.

ThreatFire - Free! A really good antivirus program. Free. Really. This program works in the background while you're busy doing really important stuff and only bothers you to give an update on what it didn't find ( well this is my experience, anyway ). It also plays nice with other antivirus programs and because of this it's the only antivirus we recommend to install and run with other antivirus programs.

Windows Security Essentials - From Microsoft. It's free. It can help.

Firewall

Comodo - Free! Like the Dragon. This is a firewall and you must have a firewall. Yes, it's true, WinXP does have a firewall. Yes, it's also true, it's not very good. One of the telling signs it's not good is that other people make them available to you at no charge, let alone the pay for versions. If windows firewall was unimpeachable than there would be no market for the other products. Try this one. It's free.

Utilities

CPU -Z - a free program that will give you information about your memory, motherboard, cpu and operating system without opening your case.  For help on understanding memory speeds and whatnot or to have a good laugh, just click here.

Exact Audio Copy - This comes highly recommended and, our favorite part, it's free. If you've been having trouble getting certain cd's copied, try this and tell me what you think.
